DIED AUGUST 1
J. D. Dozy, retired minister of the Mennonite Church of Amsterdam, passed away on Aug. 1. Jan and Jettie Dozy had lived in retirement at Barchem, Gelderland, in a home with a fitting name “Post Scriptum,” during the past years.
Dozy served as one of the ministers of the Amsterdam Mennonite Church from 1933 to 1956. Before that, he had been pastor on one of the Dutch islands and at Leeuwarden, Friesland.
Dozy had come to the Mennonite Church not by family tradition but by choice. He was an evangelical preacher, strongly emphasizing the traditional doctrinal formulations of Christendom. His sermons were possibly more “Reformed” than Dutch” Doopsgezind.” Putting it in other words, he was more “orthodox” than the average Dutch Mennonite.
He wrote a number of books and articles in which he expressed his basic beliefs and piety. Among the books was one entitled “The Wisdom of the Fools.”
After their retirement in Amsterdam, Mr. and Mrs. Dozy made a trip to the United States, spending some time among the Mennonites of Kansas. Mrs. Doty, who survives her husband, also received a theological training and has always been active in church work, particularly in religious instruction for children. The Dozy home was characterized by hospitality. Both have made significant contributions to the Mennonite brotherhood of the Netherlands through their dedicated ministry.
