MARVIN F. DOERKSEN

Marvin F. Doerksen was born Sept. 26, 1926, near Inman, Kan. He was the youngest child of Martin W. and Anna Friesen Doerksen.

He attended Inman schools but was unable to complete his senior year due to being drafted in 1944. He served 27 months in Civilian Public Service during World War II. In 1951 he entered Voluntary Service for a year. Starting at the Mennonite Central Committee center in Pennsylvania, he later transferred to Wiltwyck School for Boys in Esopus, N.Y. In 1952 Marvin was redrafted and reported to Topeka, Kan., to work with 1-W service at Topeka State Hospital. He was discharged from service in 1953.

Upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ, Marvin was baptized on May 31, 1942, John E. Kaufman and was received into membership of Inman Mennonite Church. He remained a faithful, active member until his death. His love for his Savior was evident as he served in the Laymen's organization, in Christian Endeavor, in Mennonite Disaster Service and by participating in and teaching Sunday school. He served on the board of deacons for many years. He sang in quartets, choirs and men's choruses. His special love was singing in the Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus.

A retired carpenter and painter, Marvin enjoyed fishing, gardening, all types of sports, music and singing. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He attended many musical, sporting, school and church events his daughters and granddaughters participated in.

On March 10, 1953, he married Arlene Goering at First Mennonite Church, Pretty Prairie. They shared their lives together for 47 years.

Marvin died Aug. 22, 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two daughters, Marilyn Daniels of Buhler and Norma Doerksen of Garden City; a granddaughter; two sisters, Katherine Holzrichter of Buhler and Marie Goering of North Newton; and a brother, Menno of North Newton. A brother, Henry; and a granddaughter preceded him in death.
