— A two-car collision at an intersection of township roads southeast of Buhler last Sunday afternoon claimed the lives of Miss Tina Doerksen, 68, and her sister, Miss Gertrude Doerksen, 70, of McPherson, and critically injured their 79-year-old brother, J. T. Doerksen, driver of one of the cars. He was taken to Grace Hospital in Hutchinson. Larry Dean Martens, 16, of Buhler was the driver of the other car. He and his brother Leslie, 14, were treated for minor injuries at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital here and released. Another passenger in the car, 14-year-old Gordon Schmidt of Buhler, was admitted to the hospital for treatment of a jaw injury.

— The Christmas Day car crash southeast of Buhler claimed its third victim — all members of a McPherson family — with the death of Jacob T. Doerksen, 82, early Tuesdy [sic] in a Hutchinson hospital. Mr. Doerksen's two sisters, Gertrude and Tina Doerksen, 70 and 68 years of age, died in the wreckage of their car. Three Buhler youths in the other car escaped with comparatively minor injuries. Double funeral services for the sisters were held Dec. 28 in the Church of the Brethren at McPherson. Services for their brother are scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the same church. The Doerksens had attended a Christmas gathering at the J. W. Kroeker home, Buhler.

GERTRUDE T. DOERKSEN

Gertrude T. Doerksen, daughter of Gearhard [sic Gerhard] and Sarah [sic Sara] Thiessen Doerksen, was born May 29, 1890, at Buhler, Kan., the community where she attended church, the public schools and grew to womanhood. On Dec. 5, 1909, she was baptized and became a member of the Zoar K.M.B. Church of Inman.

In 1911, she came to McPherson to attend the Nurse's Training School. She transferred her church membership to the Church of the Brethren, and remained loyal to her Savior even though her work had made regular atendance [sic] very difficult.

The Doerksen's, Mr. J. T., Miss Gertrude and Miss Justina, had established the Doerksen Nursing Home on Aug. 1, 1944, a home that not only provided food and shelter but love and kindness to their people. This home was in operation for over ten years.

The Doerksen family had spent Christmas day with the Jake Kroeker family and soon after they were involved in a tragic car accident which caused her untimely passing on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 25, 1960.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. A. F. Klassen of Fredonia, Kan.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Gertrude Doerksen's life could be exemplified by her strong Christian faith and prayer life. She was always willing to help others without thought of self or sacrifice.
