For alumni and former students Bethel is most often associated with some great teacher who as a friend and an inspiring instructor opened the doors of unselfish and useful living and who over the years was always at hand to welcome back students and share old times as well as rejoice in new achievements. Dr. J. H. Doell was such a teacher. 'Doc' Doell's rare sense of humor and constant congeniality always came to mind when his name was mentioned. His greatness also lay in his capacity to arouse and stimulate the curiosity of students.

His association with Bethel College began in the early years of this century as a student and continued as a faculty member since 1911. His academic degrees were earned at Freemont Normal School, Freemont, Nebraska, Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, and the University of Kansas. He also did considerable work at the University of Chicago. Before coming to Bethel he taught at Freeman Junior Colege 1908-10 and from 1919-21 taught in McKinley High School, Honolulu, Hawaii. Since 1950 he had been emeritus professor of biology at Bethel. He passed away April 21, 1956.
