Accidental Deaths, Injuries

TRAFFIC accidents and several other kinds of mishaps have brought death and serious injury to families in several eastern and southern communities in recent weeks.

A head-on collision near Tallahassee, Fla. on Nov. 2 claimed the life of Marcus Byler, son of Bishop and Mrs. Raymond Byler of the Bethel Conservative Church, Blountstown, Fla., and seriously injured his brother Philip. The latter was taken to a hospital in Tallahassee.

The Byler children had raised some sweet potatoes for a missionary project, and the two boys were taking them to market in Jacksonville when their vehicle collided with a large truck. Funeral services for Marcus were held Nov. 4 at the Bethel Church.

NEAR New Wilmington in western Pennsylvania, an auto crashed into a horse-drawn buggy occupied by Melvin and Owen Detweiler, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob N. Detweiler. Melvin, 18, died about two hours later in the hospital and his brother was hospitalized with concussion and other injuries. The family are of the Amish faith.

Three men were injured Nov. 4 when a car and a pickup truck collided east of Goshen, Ind. Benedict Kauffman, 46, of rural Middlebury, a passenger in the truck, was the most seriously hurt. He suffered head and chest injuries. David Beachy, 33, driver of the truck, and Larry Hershberger, 16, driver of the car, were treated at the hospital and released. Both are of rural Goshen.

A TWO-CAR collision near Greentown, Ohio on Nov. 4 resulted in a punctured lung, fractured arm and lacerations for Abner Borntrager of Hartville.

Andrew Hostetler, 45, of rural Bird-in-Had, Pa. was working at a lumber yard when bundles of insulated sheeting he was helping unload fell on the lower part of his body. He was in critical condition in Lancaster General Hospital for several days with internal injuries, a dislocated hip and fractured wrist.

Near Wilmot, Ohio, a car driven by 16-year-old Paul Raber crashed into the rear of a horse-drawn buggy. John A. and Katie Raber, 62 and 59 years of age and occupants of the buggy, were taken to the hospital in Massillon with serious injuries.
