Aged Grandfather Died at Thomas

Weatherford, Okla. — Funeral services were held at the Pleasant View Mennonite Church on March 9 for Valentine David Detweiler, 83, who died at his home southeast of Thomas on March 7. He had been in a coma since Sunday.

The services were in charge of Bishop Alva Swartzendruber.

Mr. Detweiler was born at Hopedale, Ill., on Oct. 9, 1872. He leaves his companion, six daughters, three sons, 25 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

V. D. DETWEILER

Valentine D. Detweiler, son of Christian and Mary (Kopperschmitt) Detweiler, was born Oct. 9, 1872, near Flanagan, Ill. He died March 7, 1956, age 83 years, four manths [sic] and 27 days.

At the age of four he moved with his parents to Milford, Neb. He was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite church in youth and was a faithful member until death.

On Dec.8,1895, he was united in marriage to Katie Slagell near Hartford, Kans. where they lived until 1901. They then moved to Milford, Neb., and were there until 1913 when they moved to Thomas, Okla., which was their home until his death.

One daughter, Pearl, died in 1932. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. He was the last surviving member of this family.

Survivors include his wife of the home; nine children, Mrs. Arthur Waters of Pueblo, Colo., Joe of Newton, Kans., Mrs. Pete Schantz, Jr. of Thomas, Mrs. Alvin Schantz of Hydro, Mrs. Paul Johns of Weatherford, John of Thomas, Ben of Leonard, Mo., Mrs. Roy King of Kansas City, Kans., and Mrs. Glen miller of Weatherford; 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

All of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present at the funeral held Friday, March 9, at the Pleasant View Mennonite church.
