David L. Deckert, son of Ludwig and Susanna Jantz Deckert, was born five miles west of Marion, S. D. Feb. 20, 1880, and departed this life Sept. 22, 1953, reaching the age of 73 years, seven months and two days.

David always lived at the place of his birth. He helped work on the farm up to the year 1910. He had very little schooling but learned to read and write in German and English.

David was instructed in the fundamentals of the Gospel, and baptized upon his confession of faith by Elder Dirk Tieszen on June 1, 1903.

On Sept. 17, 1953, he was found lying on the yard and was helped into the house. He complained of pain in his back. Early Monday morning it was noticed that he was unconscious. A doctor was called who said he had suffered from a heart attack. He was taken to Sioux Valley hospital and was operated on, but he passed away Tuesday morning about 6:00 o'clock.

One brother and one sister died in infancy. Another brother, Ben L., died in November 1947.

There still remain two brothers, Andrew L. Deckert of Marion and George L. Deckert of Glendive, Montana; and four sisters, Lena (Mrs. Peter Engbrecht) of Marion, Eva of the home, Susie (Mrs. P. K. Tieszen) of Richey, Montana, and Nettie (Mrs. John P. Deckert) of Marion.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 25 in the Bethesda Mennonite church, of which he was a member, by Rev. T. A. Van der Smissen, pastor. Rev. M. A. Kraeker, pastor of the Silverlake M. B. church, spoke in German. He was laid to rest in the community Mennonite cemetery.

DAVID L. DECKERT

David L. Deckert, son of Ludwig and Susanna Jantz Deckert, was born five miles west of Marion, S. D. Feb. 20, 1880, and departed this life Sept. 22, 1953, reaching the age of 73 years, seven months and two days.
