At the age of six years he immigrated with his parents to the United States and settled in Marion County, Kansas, near Hillsboro. Here he received his schooling at an early age. In his early youth he was baptized upon confusion of faith in his Redeemer by Rev. J. S. Hirschler.

Heinrich Dalke, Sohn von Cornelius und Anna Duerksen Dalke, wurde geboren den 31. August 1867 in Süd-Rußland. 1874 kam er mit seinen Eltern nach Hillsboro, Kansas. Dort ging er zur Alltagsschule und wurde auf das Bekenntnis seines Glaubens getauft von Pred. J. S. Hirschler. 1909 [sic 1891*] heiratete er Anna Buller. Dieser Ehe wurden neun Kinder geschenkt; eins starb im zarten, Kindesalter und eine Tochter im Alter von 19 Jahren. Die Familie hatte ihr Heim zu Hillsboro bis das Indianer Land von Oklahoma (Cherokee Strip) geöffnet wurde. Dann zog sie nach Cordell, Oklahoma, und wohnte da bis 1909 [sic 1901*] als der Tod die Mutter nahm. 1910 heiratete er Anna Matthies von Buhler, Kansas. Dieser Ehe wurden 12 Kinder geschenkt (Ein Kind starb im zarten Kindesalter) und ihnen wurde vergönnt Freud und Leid miteinander zu teilen über 32 Jahre. Von Cordell zog die Familie nach Hillsboro, Kansas, und nach 2 Jahren nach Vinita, Oklahoma wo sie drei Jahre wohnten; von da zogen sie nach Du Bois, Idaho. Diese Gegend mußten sie nach sechs Jahren wieder verlassen wegen den wiederholten Fehlernten und kamen nach Aberdeen, Idaho in 1920. In 1925 feirte das Ehepaar ihre Silberne Hochzeit. Obwohl der Verstorbene gute Gesundheit hatte, dennoch in den letzten Jahren wurde auch er hinfällig und wurde sehr krank am 18. Dezember nach dem American Falls Hospital gebracht und starb am 22. Dec. 1942, im Alter von 75 J. 3 M. und 21 Tagen. Er hinterläßt seine Gattin, sechs Kinder von der ersten Ehe: Anna (Mrs. J. B. Lehrman) Brooks, Oregon, Arthur zu Salem, Oregon; Henry K. zu San Leanders, California; Ella (Mrs. C. K. Dalke) Berkeley, Cal.; Jacob B. zu Hayward, Cal.; und Clara (Mrs. A. T. Miles) zu Portland, Oregon; und elf Kinder von der 2. Ehe: Esther, (Mrs. Henry Ediger) Seattle, Washington; Ferdinand, zu Aberdeen; Arnold, zu Eugene, Oregon; Rozella, (Mrs. Edmund Wilski) Am. Falls, Ida.; Private Ernest M. Dalke, Camp Atterbury Indiana, Aviation Cadet Orlando M. Dalke, San Antonio, Texas, und Eldon, Linda und Ruth zu Aberdeen. Auch 20 Großkinder, 2 Brüder und 2 Schwestern und Freunde betrauern seinen Tod. Prediger Philip A. Wedel hielt die Leichenfeier im Hause und auch in der Kirche am 27. Dezember.

News of General Interest

— Henry Dalke, for many years a well known citizen of the Mennonite community at Aberdeen, Idaho, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 22, at an American Falls Hospital. Born in Russia, he came to America with his parents and lived in Kansas and Oklahoma before moving to Idaho. Funeral services were held at the Mennonite church in Aberdeen. Mr. Dalke was 75 years old.

Aberdeen, Idaho. — Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 27, 1942, at the home at 2:00 o’clock and at the Mennonite church at 2:30 o’clock for Henry Dalke who passed away at the American Falls hospital Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1942. Rev. Phil A. Wedel officiated at the services.

“Asleep in Jesus” and “Heaven Is My Home” were sung by a mixed quartet, composed of Alvin Funk, Edwin Friesen, Mrs. Otto Becker and Miss Alice Lehman.

“Near the Heart of God” was sung by Carl Wenger.

A male quartet consisting of Herman Hege, Gus Klemple, Edwin Becker and Rev. Wedel, with Mrs. Lois Harms at the piano, and two numbers, “Gathering Home” at the church and “Many Mansions” at the cemetery.

At the age of 24 years he married Anna Buller. To this union were born nine children. Two died in infancy and one daughter Lena died at the age 19, in 1921. The family made their home at Hillsboro, Kansas, for several years until the opening of the Indian Territory of Oklahoma, known as the Cherokee Strip. the family moved to a homestead near Cordell, Oklahoma and made their home there until 1901. In the same year the mother was taken from the home in death.

In 1910, Mr. Dalke married Anna Matthies of Buhler, Kansas, with whom he shared life’s joys and sorrows for over 32 years. Twelve children were born to this union, one dying in infancy.

From Cordell, Oklahoma, the family moved back to Hillsboro, Kansas, where they lived for about two years and then returned to Vinita, Oklahoma, which proved to be their home for about three years; after which they moved to Dubois, Idaho, where they lived for 6 years. On account of crop failures in this dry farming section of Idaho the family moved in 1929, to Aberdeen, Idaho, where the deceased lived until his death.

In 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dalke had the privilege of celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Although Mr. Dalke enjoyed good health all of his life yet is declining years his health began to fail. He became seriously ill at his home in Aberdeen Friday, Dec. 18 and was taken to the American Falls hospital where he passed away Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1942. He reached the age of 75 years, 8 months and 21 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his sorrowing wife, six children from his first marriage: Anna (Mrs. J. V. Lehrman) Brooks, Oregon; Arthur of Salem, Oregon; Henry K., of San Leanders [sic San Leandro], Cal.; Jacob B. of Hayward, Cal.; and Clara (Mrs. A. T. Miles) of Portland, Oregon.

Eleven children of the second marriage: Esther (Mrs. Henry Ediger) Seattle, Washington; Ferdinand of Aberdeen; Arnold of Eugene, Oregon; Martha (Mrs. Donald Misner) Seattle, Washington; Pauline (Mrs. Edmund Wilski) American Falls, Idaho; Private Ernest M. Dalke, Camp Atterbury, Indiana; Aviation Cadet Orlando M. Dalke, San Antonio, Texas, and Eldon, Linda and Ruth of Aberdeen, Idaho.

Also 20 grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. Only two of the children (Henry and Clara) were not able to be present at the burial of their departed father.

HENRY DALKE. August 31, 1857 [sic 1867], to December 22, 1942, was born in south Russia, the son of Cornelius and Anna Duerksen Dalke. With his parents he migrated to Marion County, Kansas. During his life he lived at or near Hillsboro, Kansas; Cordell, Oklahoma; Vinita, Oklahoma; Du Bois, Idaho; and Aberdeen, Idaho. He was baptized by John S. Hirschler. When twenty-four years old he married Anna Buller. In 1909 she was taken from him in death. In 1910 he married Anna Mathies of Buhler, Kansas. In 1935 they celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.
