His last three months of life were filled with intense suffering from a cancerous condition which is believed to have caused his death.

In 1908, at the age of 17, he united with the Herold Mennonite church at Cordell, Okla., and his faith sustained him to the end.

On April 20, 1913, he was united in holy matrimony with Elizabeth Dick, and to this union seven children were born.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, an infant son, four brother, and one sister.

Those left to mourn his passing are his devoted wife; one son, George, of the home, five daughters, Mrs. Denis Talkington, Weatherford, Okla.; Mrs. Oliver Bryan, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Jack Bryan, Hydro, Okla.; Mrs. Richard Patterson, Hydro, Okla.; and Mrs. Leo Rust, Hydro, Okla.; six brothers, Menno, Salem, Oregon; Will, Puente, Calif.; Tom, Salem, Oregon; Theodore, Ammsville [sic Aumsville], Oregon; Walter, Tulsa, Okla.; Paul, Oklahoma City, Okla.; his step-mother, Mrs. Helena Dalke, Inman, Kansas; two half-brothers, Robert, Inman, Kansas; Carl, in the armed forces overseas; 11 grandchildren and a host of friends.

I cannot say — and I will not say
That he is dead — he is just away
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand
He has wandered into an unknown land.

And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs msut be, since he lingers there,
And you — O You — who the wildest yearn
For the old time step and glad return

Think of him faring on — as dear
In the love of there, as the love of here
think of him still as the same, I say
He is not dead — he is just away.
