12-Year-Old Indiana Boy Drowns While Skating on Lake

Shipshewana, Ind. — Memorial services for James Culp, 12-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Culp who drowned while ice skating on Shipshewana Lake, were held Feb. 6 at the Bethel Conservative Mennonite Church near Nappanee, with Rev. Homer North officiating.

The lad went skating alone on Monday evening Feb. 3, near his parents' lakefront home. About a half hour later the parents noticed that he was no longer on the lake, and began a search of the nearby area. Unable to find the lad, they called state, county and Shipshewana officials.

The widespread search continued until midnight, and then resumed the next morning. The body was recovered from the lake about 8:45 a. m. by a state police skin diver. The lad had broken through thin ice about 200 yards offshore.

During the nighttime search, Dr. Culp broke through the ice and was rescued by the local sheriff.

The Culp family moved to Shipshewana Lake about four months ago from Belleville, Pa. and Dr. Culp took up the practice of osteopathy.

Surviving in addition to the parents are two brothers, John, 17, and Paul, 15; two sisters, Helen, 13, and Ruth, 8; and the grandparents, Mrs. Elmer (Naomi) Culp of Elkhart and Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Powell of Wellman, Iowa.
