● Frieda (Bergen) Cornies Cornelsen, 83, of Newton, died April 19 at Newton Medical Center. Graveside services were held April 21 at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, with James Dunn officiating. She was a retired nurse aide at Axtell Christian Hospital and a homemaker. A native of Russia, she came to the United States at age 14,losing her family to typhoid on the way. She lived in Harvey County most of her life. Survivors include her husband, C. H.; two step daughters, Barbara Joyce Leckington of Newton and Janice Marie Froese of Dallas; one stepson, Ken Cornelsen of Wichita; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Her first husband, A. H. Cornies, died in 1950. Also preceding her in death was one son, E. A. Cornies.
