Accidents in Iowa Community Claim One Dead, Three Injured
Kalona, Iowa. — Two traffic accidents near here within a few days' time claimed one life and injured three others.
A crash on Highway 1 on Sept. 18 involved cars driven by Paris L. Miller of Kalona, Raymond E. Clay of Wellman, and Urie Swartzendruber of Kalona. Miller and Clay were taken to University Hospital in Iowa City with critical injuries, and Clay's 16 year-old sister, Gail, died at the same hospital several hours after the crash. She was pulled from the burning Clay auto by Mrs. Russell Miller, who lives nearby.
Urie Swartzendruber and three passengers escaped serious injury.
Two days later, cars driven by Eli A. Swartzendruber and Kenneth Miller collided on Old Highway 1 near the Fairview Mennonite Church. Swartzendruber was hospitalized with 12 fractured ribs and a broken shoulder blade, while Miller had only minor hurts.
