MRS. ALICE CHARLES

Alice Charles, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Overholt Holcomb, was born April 17, 1881, in Plumstead township, Bucks county, Penna. She was baptized on confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour on October 23, 1897, by Pastor Allen M. Fretz and became a member of the Deep Run Mennonite congregation of the General Conference. She was a faithful member of this congregation for her entire life.

On March 9, 1899, she married Joseph K. Charles. They lived in and near the village of Dublin during their married lives. They had 14 children, nine of whom are still living. They are: Raymond, Annie, Rosella, Arthur, Mary Harvey, Remandus, Aaron and Ida.

Alice was a quiet Christian and a faithful another. She thought of her many children and often spoke about them. During the last years she felt the burden of a failing eyesight which took from her her needlework, but she kept her house and worked with her hands to the end. She loved to come to church and was regularly brought by her children.

Ill for one week, she quietly passed from this life Friday morning, February 20, 1953, at the age of almost 71 years.

Those who preceded her in death were: one brother, one sister, her husband, and five children. Those who remain are: nine children, 20 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday, February 25, at the Deep Run meetinghouse and interment was in the adjoining cemetery. The pastor, J. Herbert Fretz, preached, on Psalm 23:4, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.”
