Former CIA Director Dies of Cancer at 74

William J. Casey, who resigned as CIA director in February due to ill health, died May 6 of pneumonia attributed to cancer at the age of 74. A former Wall Street lawyer, he had headed the spy agency since Ronald Reagan's election as president.

Casey died without testifying in depth about his role in the Iran-Contra controversy. He collapsed of a brain seizure in December on the day he was to have told of the diversion of funds from Iran arms sales to the Nicaraguan rebels.
