Michigan Girl Dies When Auto and Fire Truck Collide

Goshen, Ind. — The collision of an auto and a fire truck near Sturgis, Mich. on April 1 claimed the life of Tammy Carpenter, 10-year-old daughter of Rev. and Mrs. James Carpenter of rural Sturgis. Rev. Carpenter is director of Camp Amigo, Mennonite camp northwest of that city.

Mrs. Carpenter, the former Faith Swartzendruber, was driving the car when it was hit broadside by the fire truck at an intersection. She escaped serious injury, but her daughter Cheryl Ann, 3, and Rhonda Kay Hochstetler, 10, were both hospitalized with injuries. The two men on the fire truck were seriously hurt. They were en route to a brush fire at the time of the crash.

Besides her parents and sister, Tammy is survived by a brother, Mitchell James, and two grandparents, Mrs. Lydia Swartzendruber of Wellman, Iowa and Joseph D. Carpenter of Centreville, Mich.

Funeral services were held April 3 at the Locust Grove Mennonite Church, Findley, Mich.
