Second Daughter Dies of Injuries After Michigan Crash

Sturgis, Mich. — Three-year-old Cheryl Ann Carpenter of rural Sturgis died in the hospital here on April 12 of injuries received in a traffic accident four days earlier — the same crash that claimed the life of her sister Tamara Sue, 10.

The two girls were passengers in a station wagon driven by their mother, Mrs. James Carpenter of rural Sturgis, when it was involved in a collision with a fire truck at an intersection near Centreville. Tamara was dead on arrival at the hospital. Her mother was treated at the hospital and released, while another passenger, 10-year-old Rhonda Kay Hochstetler, was hospitalized but is improving.

Rev. James Carpenter, the husband and father is manager of Camp Amigo, Mennonite youth camp, and also associate pastor of the Locust Grove Funeral services for both girls were held at that church. The Carpenters have a son, Mitchell James, of the home.

Seriously injured in the crash were the two firemen, Ralph D. Weber and Keith Berger, both of Centreville. Weber was admitted to intensive care at a Kalamazoo hospital. His wife is a first cousin of Rev. Carpenter.
