OSCAR BURKHOLDER OF BRESLAU WAS TEACHER, EVANGELIST AND PASTOR

Kitchener, Ont. — Ontario Mennonite communities were saddened by the death of Bishop Oscar Burkholder of Breslau, widely known and respected pastor and evangelist, which occurred Oct. 29. He had been ill for some time and during the last several weeks suffered from a heart ailment. He reached the age of 70.

Bishop Burkholder was well known in Canadian and United States churches for his evangelistic work and long service on boards and committees of the (Old) Mennonite Church, including the General Problems Committee, Publishing committee, and the Mission Board.

For many years he served as chairman of the Non-Resistant Relief Organization of Ontario and was its official member to the MCC. He taught at the Mennonite Bible School, Kitchener, for 37 years, including a number of years as principal. He was pastor of the Cressman congregation at Breslau for 43 years prior to his retirement in 19t4, and was active in the Ontario Mennonite Conference.

Funeral services were conducted Oct. 31 at the Cressman church with Carl Rudy, the present pastor, in charge. Others taking part in the service were J. B. Martin, C. F. Derstine, Roy Koch and A. J. Swaim. A large number of ministers, and deacons from this and other districts attended.
