92-Year-Old Berne Business Man Dies After Brief Illness

Berne, Ind. — Menno Burkhalter, 92, this community's oldest active merchant and a long-time civic and church leader, died Aug. 27 after a three-day illness.

A lifelong resident here, Mr. Burkhalter founded the Fair Store in 1903 and continued active in the business until his final illness. He taught in the Sunday school of the First Mennonite Church for 75 years, conducting a class the Sunday before his death. He was also a charter member of the Mennonite Men's Chorus, organized in 1895, and continued as a member until his death. He sang in the Mennonite Choral Society the greater part of his life.

Mr. Burkhalter was active in the Gideons and the Christian Business Men's Committee.

His wife, the former Sarah Gilliom, died in 1966 after more than 62 years of marriage. Surviving are two sons, Dr. freeman Bukhalter of Berne and Rev. Edward H. Burkhalter, missionary in India; three daughters, Misses Frances and Lorraine Burkhalter of Berne and Mrs. Estus Mason of Crystal Springs, Miss.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and three sisters.
