Marie Schroeder was born Herminia Burde on Feb. 3, 1898, and given to an orphanage at Quincy, Ill. At the age of three months she was taken by train to Halstead, Kan., and adopted by Mr. and Mrs. David K. Schmidt, who gave her a new name, Marie. The Schmidts also had an adopted son, John.

On Dec. 26, 1917, she was baptized and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel, where she remained a member until her death.

On Nov. 24, 1918, she was married to Alvin Schroeder. Four children were born to them. They also took in her adopted brother's children when their mother died.

She considered the Depression a challenge and made the best of the low prices.

In 1968 she and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They moved from the farm to Goessel the next year. Her husband died Sept. 10, 1976. Later she moved to Bethesda Home in Goessel.

On Feb. 3, 1988, she celebrated her 90th birthday. On Feb. 10, she suffered a fatal heart attack.

She is survived by four children, Lorene of Boulder, Colo., Hilma of Scottsdale, Ariz., Merlin of Wichita and LaVern of Goessel, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 14 at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel.
