FANNIE BUCHER

Fannie Luetta (Mills) Bucher was born on Oct. 10, 1890 to James Scott and Rebecca Mills at New Paris, Ind. She died Feb. 1, 1977 at the Mennonite Home for the Aged, Albany, Ore. at the age of 86.

On Mar. 20, 1909 Fannie was married to James Bucher in her parents’ home at New Paris. The Lord graciously saved them both during a revival at the Madison Union Chapel west of Wakarusa, Ind. about five years after their marriage. She was truly a helpmeet to her husband. After James was ordained to the ministry and was called to serve in revival meetings, sometimes for weeks at a time, she faithfully stayed at home to care for the children.

While the Buchers lived in Davies [sic Daviess] County, Indiana, Fannie’s aged parents came to make their home with them. During this time her mother accepted the Lord at the age of 75.

During their Indiana residence they took into their home a baby girl less than two weeks old whose mother had died. This baby was Amy Yoder. She was a great blessing in their home. She lived with them and cared for them until about a year and a half ago, when her health failed.

In 1932 the Buchers moved from Davies [sic Daviess] County to Upland, Calif. When the children were grown, she went with father in the revival work. She often conducted a children’s meeting before father gave the message. There have been those who have come years later and said to her, “I remember the children’s lesson you gave in our church.”

In 1943 they moved from Upland, Calif. to Hubbard, Ore., then several years later they moved to Portland, Ore. where they spend over 30 years ministering among their Jewish friends.

About three and one-half years ago mother suffered a light stroke. From that time on she began to fail, but she never complained. She was much concerned about her unsaved loved ones and friends.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Abraham and Everett, and her foster daughter, Amy Yoder.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter Olive, Mrs. Abraham Miller of Estracada, Ore.; two sons, Harold of Elida, Ohio and Paul of Olympia, Wash.; 18 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

Mother was a member of the Hopewell Mennonite Church, Hubbard, for years. Later she transferred her membership to the Berean Mennonite Church in Portland. At the time of her passing she was a member of the Porter Mennonite Church, but she was never able to attend services there because of failing health.

Funeral services were held at the Hopewell church on Feb. 4, 1977 in charge of Ernest Bontrager, Wilbert Kropf, Maynard Headings, and John Yoder, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
