Four-Year-Old Boy Fatally Hurt in Tomato Planter

Smoketown, Pa. — The first farm accident in Lancaster County in 1963 claimed the life of four-year-old James LeMarr Brubaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. Brubaker of Route 1, Strasburg, on Saturday evening, May 11.

While in the field with members of the family who were planting tomatoes, James was running by the side of the planter when he apparently lost his balance or his clothing caught in the shoe of the machine. He was dragged beneath the planter by the shoe, which digs holes for the plants. He died a short time later at Lancaster General Hospital while undergoing emergency surgery.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Kenneth Eugene, and Donald Lynn, and one sister, Mary Ellen, all at home; and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Landis Groff of the Strasburg area and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brubaker of Rt. 2, Gap.

James attended the Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church. The funeral service was conducted at the Paradise Mennonite Church.
