Transplanted Heart Gives Up After 594 Days
At Cape Town, South Africa, the 60-year-old Philip Blaiberg's transplanted heart finally gave out after 594 days.
Blaiberg had been the world's longest surviving heart transplant patient and had lived an almost normal life since his first heart was removed on Jan. 2, 1968. The family requested his body be cremated.
Of the 142 heart transplants that have been performed around the world, 37 patients are still alive — including two of the five heart recipients operated on by Blaiberg's physician, Dr. Christiaan Barnard.
