ALICE JANE BICKEL

Alice Jane (Bare) Bickel daughter of Benjamin W. and Magdalena Good Bare, was born in Clarinda, Iowa, on December 17, 1868, and departed this life on December 1, 1946, at her home in Harped [sic Harper] Kansas, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 16 days.

At the age of four she came with her parents to Marion county, Kansas, and has lived in Kansas most of her life. She accepted Christ as her Savior and became a member of the Mennonite Church in her youth, and remained faithful to her convictions and beliefs until the end.

On December 24, 1893, she was married to John Bickel. Seven children were born to this union. One son and one daughter preceded her in death. Her aged husband also preceded her by only five weeks.

Her remaining five children are Maggie Bauer of Harper, Mary Ellen Hollcroft of Omaha, Nebr., Chauncey J. of Topeka, Fred of Pueblo, Colo., and Charles of Harper. Thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also remain.

Alice was the oldest of two brothers and six sisters. One sister, Lydia Berkey Reiff, preceded her in death. The remaining sisters and brothers are: Mrs. Fannie Burkhart, Elkhart, Indiana; Mahlon G. Bare, Adair, Okla.; Mrs. Nannie Weaver, Webb City, Mo.; Joseph H. Bare, Harper; Mrs. Kate Underwood, Modesto, Calif.; and Mrs. Martha Hostetler, Portland, Oregon. There are also a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was a kind and loving mother, always prayerful at heart and thoughtful of others. In recent years her one ambition was to live long enough to care for her blind husband until his death. The text she had chosen was II Timothy 4:6-8.

The funeral was held in the afternoon, Dec. 3, 1946, in charge of W. R. Nafziger, assisted by R. M. Weaver. Interment was made in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.
