text of obituary:

Dorothea Lois, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. William Dyck, was born Feb. 6, 1904, in Moundridge, Kan. The family moved to Reedley in 1911, where she attended both elementary and high school. After receiving a baccalauerate [sic] degree from LaVerne College and teaching a few years in the Reedley public schools, she did graduate work at Stanford University.

While at LaVerne, she worked as secretary for the president of the college and while at Stanford, she served first as secretary to the superintendent of the Palo Alto public schools and later as secretary for the National Broadcasting Company. It was at Stanford University that Gilbert Betts met her. They were married in the University Chapel on June 15, 1929.

They first went to Washington, D.C., where her husband served the U.S. Office of Education as a research psychologist. Successive jobs led them to Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota and Ohio. While in Fort Collins, Colo., where her husband was supervisor of graduate research at Colorado A. and M. College she typed theses for students in Education and Psychology. While in Ohio, she established a private vari-typing business and set copy for various publishers using offset printing.

In the fall of 1960 the couple retired to her childhood home in Reedley and transferred membership from the Church of the Brethren to the First Mennonite Church, in which her father was always active. After returning to Reedley, she gladly assisted the church in the publication of its monthly Church news.

Her heavenly father called her home on Aug. 3, 1966, at the age of 62 years, 5 months and 17 days, after several months of illness. She is survived by her husband, Gilbert L. Betts of Reedley; her son William J. Betts of Lancaster, Calif.; her daughter, Viola R. Buckner, now in Okinawa with her husband; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betts were held on August 8 at 10 a.m. in the First Mennonite Church of Reedley. Officiating was Rev. Roland F. Goering.
