JOHN PETER BERGMANN
John P. Bergmann of Virgil, Ontario, passed away in the St. Catharines General Hospital on May 5. He was born on July 15, 1888 in Ladekopp, South Russia. There he spent his childhood and adolescent years. Before entering the forestry service, as a youth, he made his all-important experience with Christ and was converted. From then on his aim was to serve his Master. The medical corps in which he served during the First World War and the revolution brought many hardships but also gave him the opportunity to minister to his fellowmen.
He was married to Maria Enns in 1921, a union which was blessed with five children, two of whom died in infancy. In 1924 the family left Russia and established a new home in Hochfeld, Manitoba. They lived there for 11 years, moving from there to Poplar Point, Man. In 1941 the family moved to Ontario and lived near Niagara-on-the-Lake. Later they retired to Virgil.
Mr. Bergmann began to lose his eye sight in his later years and from the summer of 1958 he was totally blind. His wife and two daughters often read to him and it was a great blessing for him to recall the many Bible verses and hymns whhch he had earlier committed to memory. In 1968 the Lord took his wife home and two years later later several months of illness, he followed her. He leaves to mourn, two daughters, Martha and Mary, of Virgil; a son, Walter and his wife, Helen, of Niagara-on-the Lake; five grandchildren; a brother, Abram, of Steinbach, Man.; and a stepsister, Tina Rempel, of Winnipeg. Rev. John G. Baerg and Rev. George Wichert ministered at the funeral which was held in the Virgil Mennonite Brethren Church on May 8.
