— Mrs. George H. Bergen, 77, of Goessel died at the Bethesda hospital there Sunday morning. Funeral services were held Wednesday forenoon at the Springfield K.M.B. Church with Rev. W. W. Harms in charge. Mrs. Bergen, the former Justina Doerksen, was born in South Russia and was married there to George H. Bergen in 1907. They came to America that same year and settled in the Goessel community, where they later established the Bergen Funeral home. Mr. Bergen died in January of this year. Surviving are a son, Henry G. of Goessel, a daughter Selma of the home, and two grandchildren.

MRS. GEORGE H. BERGEN

Our mother, Justina Bergen, daughter of Abraham and Marie Doerksen, was born March 13,1881, in the village of Fischau, South russia, where she spent her early childhood and youth.

On Feb. 19, 1907, she was united in holy matrimony to George H. Bergen and together our parents started on their voyage to the United States approximately a month later. They arrived in Galveston, Tex. on May 6, having spent 23 days on the ocean. They made their home in Goessel, Kan.

While attending evangelistic services held by Rev. Frank Wiens, mother realized her lost condition and accepted Christ as her personal Saviour. Both of our parents had a real experience of salvation and both were baptized by Rev. John S. Foth and received into the Mennonite Brethren Church at Goessel on Sept. 25, 1910.

When the Goessel church dissolved, they transferred their membership to the Lehigh M. B. Church and later, for convenience sake, to the Springfield K.M.B. Church.

To this union two children were born, one son Henry and one daughter Maria who died in infancy. Later a daughter, Selma Lily, came to make her home with them.

On Jan. 15, 1958, only five months and 14 days prior to our mother's departure, father went to be with the Lord. Although mother was in fair health she remarked several times, “I may soon leave you also.”

For some time she had been in discomfort because of a heart condition and sought medical aid. On June 17, 1958, she suffered a light heart attack and was taken to the Bethesda hospital in Goessel. Her health improved and she expected to be dismissed in the near future. While in the hospital she said to us that she had submitted to whatever way the Lord would lead.

On June 29 she suffered another heart attack and at 2:15 a. m. she peacefully went to be with her Saviour.

Mother loved the Word of God and enjoyed the Christian fellowship and worship services of the church.

She leaves to mourn her sudden departure her children, Henry and wife Eunice of Goessel, and Selma of the home; two grandchildren, Henry and wife Deloris of Wichita, and Daniel of Goessel; four brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law, P. H. Bergen of Goessel, Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Dick of Blaine, Wash., Mr. and Mrs. Jacob F. Voth of Rural Route, Newton, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Abraham P. Giesbrecht of Winkler, Man.; one nephew, Bernhard Doerksen and family of Coaldale, Alta., and many relatives and friends. — The Children.
