Henry Berg

Henry Berg was born October 14, 1859, in the village of Elizabethal, South Russia.

His parents were Peter Berg and Eva Duerksen. When 8 years old he was taken into the home of his uncle, Henry Franz of Steinfeld. When his parents immigrated to the United States he came with them. They arrived here on June 29, 1879. He lived with his foster parents up to his 29th year.

After having received religious instructions he was baptized upon the confession of his faith, August 15, 1880, by Elder Jacob Buller and joined the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church, where he was a faithful member at the time of his death. He married Anna Boese on March 12, 1889. Rev. Heinrich Goertz officiated at their wedding. Mrs. Berg died November 13, 1929, and as they had no children he was left alone. He now sold all his personal property and entered the Bethesda Home at Goessel, as a broken man with the intention to spend the remainder of his years in the Home.

A little later he submitted to an operation for cataract of the eye, which was successful. As he was a quiet, industrious man, he soon found something to do about the Home. It was a pleasure for him to assist here and there and he evidenced a keen interest for all that happened. Many a quiet hour he spent in his room reading his Bible. This gave him strenght [sic] to overcome the adverse experiences and dark hours, but deep in his heart there lingered a longing for the heavenly home.

Heart and kidney trouble and old age caused him much trouble during the last years. Slowly his strength began to fail and one thing after another had to be given up, which is not easy.

On October 14 he celebrated his 80th birthday and greatly appreciated all acts of kindness extended to him on this day. Since he was too weak to walk upstairs, he felt more and more lonesome.

He became bedfast on October 30 and there followed several days of severe suffering, but he kept the faith until the end. The end came quietly on November 4, at 8:30 p.m. and he went to be with the Lord. He spent 9 years, 10 months and29 days in the Bethesda Home. He reached the age of 80 years and 20 days. The Home and many relatives and friends remember him in love.

"Gone to the light that shines so fair,
Gone from the earth of sorrow and care,
Resting those hands that did their best,
Gone, dear friend, gone to rest."

Funeral services were held at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church Thursday, November 9. Rev. P. H. Unruh spoke on Heb. 11, 6 and Rev. C. C. Wedel on 1 Cor. 15: 26.
