Tobias Berg

Toby Berg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Berg, was born April 10, 1900, near Marion, S. Dak. He passed to the Great Beyond on July 11, 1939, in the General hospital of Glendive, Montana. He reached the age of 39 years, 3 months and 1 day.

During his youth his parents moved to Arena, N. Dak., where he grew to manhood. At the age of 26 years he accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior, and was baptized on the confession of his faith by Rev. Jacob A. Thiezen, and was taken into the fellowship of the Zion Mennonite church of Arena, N. Dak.

One [sic] June 12, 1927, he was united in holy matrimony with Lydia Schmidt, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William P. Schmidt of Richey, Montana. They made their home in this community near Richey. One son Elton was born to this union on June 18, 1930.

Toby was often troubled with rheumatism and other pains. He would often walk or work a little in order to get rid of his pain.

On Saturday, July 8, he became sick, but was able to be up and around all day. Sunday morning he felt somewhat better, so that they could attend church services. Monday morning he had quite a pain, which continually got worse so that he was obliged to stay in bed. Home remedies were applied as much as possible but without relief. Tuesday forenoon it was decided that other help was needed so at 1:30 o’clock he was taken to the General Hospital of Glendive. The doctor examined him and found that he had a severe attack of gall bladder trouble and an attack of appendicitis.

He was operated at five o’clock in the afternoon. A large stone was found in the bladder, and his bladder in such condition that it was impossible to live. He passed to his reward while the doctors were working with him. There were 5 doctors and 3 nurses present during his operation and death.

Toby Berg leaves to mourn his death, his beloved wife and son Elton, his father of Arena, N. Dak., 2 brothers and 2 sisters, Isaac of Driscoll, N. Dak.; Fred of Arena, N. Dak.; Mrs. Martin Rauch of Volt, Mont.; his father- and mother-in-law, brothers and sisters-in-law, and many friends.

We mourn not as those who have no hope, having the assurance that we will see him again some day. He said he was prepared to go.

He also admonished his wife and son to read the Bible oftener so that things may go well with them.

His mother and 2 brothers, Henry and Jacob and one sister Annie preceded him in death.
