JOHN J. BEIER

John J. Beier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johann and Nette Engbrecht Beier, was born April 4, 1876, in Parker, South Dakota, and departed this life at 5:30 p. m. June 2, 1959, reaching the age of 83 years, one month, and 29 days.

At the age of 14 he received Christ as his personal Saviour and was subsequently baptized and received into membership of the Mennonite Brethren Church at Marion, South Dakota.

On Feb. 22, 1900, he was united in holy matrimony to Helena Friesen of Mt. Lake, Minn. To this union were born nine children, of which three preceded him in death. At Mt. Lake they began their life's career, which was farming.

In 1913, together with several other families, they moved to Inverness, Mont. And there began a new settlement. Due to drought and crop failures they resettled 300 miles farther east in the Lustre community. Here they farmed until 1936 when they moved to Salem, Oregon in retirement and where they lived in peace and quietness until Jan. 11, 1952, when his dear wife and our mother, after a brief illness, passed away into the presence of her Lord.

Our father lived alone for about two years when his health failed and he needed care. He lived with his grandchild, Alice Goertzen, for six months, then in a Dallas Rest Home for six months, and after this with his son, Harry, almost without interruption for about four years.

He leaves to mourn his passing six children, Nettie, Mrs. Otto Gerdes of Mt. Lake, Hilda, Mrs. Jake Martens of Frazer, Mont., Henry of Frazer, Harry of Sanger, Calif., Leland of Seattle, Wash., and Earl of Portland, Oregon; two brothers, Jakj [sic Jacob] of Okanagan, Wash., Dave of Rhame, North Dakota; three sisters, Margaret, Mrs. Bernhard Friesen of Delft, Minn., Mary, Mrs. August Schimnowski of Minneapolis, Minn., Nettie, Mrs George Wall of Mt. Lake; 18 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.

Officiating at the funeral, held June 6, 1959 at 2 p.m., was Rev. Frank Wiens, pastor of the Kingwood Bible Church of Salem, Oregon. Interment was made at Belcrest Cemetery, Salem.
