"When her granddaughter Marie was 15 years old her grandparents went by bus to Los Angeles to visit their daughter Mary Becker who was an osteopath doctor. On the return journey, while getting gas at a station the bus caught fire and Katharina was badly burned and ultimately died. In the 1880 Census she is listed as living in York County, Nebraska. She sailed on the SS Donau landing in New York, according to the 1878 ship list."
