Highway Accidents Take Tragic Toll Over Week End

CRASHES CAUSE THREE DEATHS AND NEARLY A DOZEN INJURIES

Highway accidents caused tragic injuries and loss of three lives in the Newton area over the past week end.

A late Sunday afternoon crash at a crossing on the blacktop road south of Hillsboro resulted in the instant death of Mrs. Claudia Goering, 44, wife of David C. Goering, who was driver of the car. Also fatally injured were their daughter, Paulette, 12, who died in Axtell Christian Hospital late Monday evening, and Albert Becker, 46, of Galva, who died in the same hospital at 1:40 p. m. Tuesday. Still in critical condition there on Wednesday morning was David Jr., the Goerings' 14-year-old son, Mrs. Becker having been dismissed to go home. Mr. Goering also had been badly injured.

Occupants of the other car with which the Goering machine collided were Mr. and Mrs. Durward Regier of Wichita and their three children. All are reported to be on the way to recovery at Axtell Christian Hospital.

Confined at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital are Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Schierling, who were injured at about five o'clock Sunday afternoon in an accident four miles west of Newton, on Highway 50. Mrs. Schierling was still unconscious Wednesday morning, but her husband was considerably improved.

Funeral services for Mrs. Goering and daughter will be held Thursday afternoon at the Eden Mennonite church northwest of Moundridge, Rev. Arnold Nickel officiating Time of the funeral for Mr. Becker, who was a member of the West Zion church, had not yet been announced.

The Goerings and Beckers were on the way home from Kansas City, where they had visited their children, Mr. and Mrs. Carrol Goering, who are in I-W service there. The collision occurred at the crossing of the Moundridge and Hillsboro roads. The Goering home is two and three-fourths miles west of Moundridge, on the old homestead of Mr. Goering's parents, the late Rev. C. J. Goering, and Mrs. Goering.

The head-on crash in which the Schierlings were involved happened on an open stretch of road and was reported to have been due to brakes locking on the Schierling car.

NEWTON WOMAN HURT IN CRASH DIES WITHOUT REGAINING CONSCIOUSNESS

Mrs. George Schierling, Sr. of Route 4, Newton, who was critically injured in a collision on Highway 50 west of Newton Oct. 5, died Tuesday evening at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital without regaining consciousness.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the First Mennonite Church of Newton, with burial at Buhler.

Mr. Schierling, who suffered fractured vertebrae in the crash, remains a patient at the hospital.

David C. Goering and 14-year-old son David of Moundridge seriously injured in a two-car collision south of Hillsboro, also on Oct. 5, have now been released from the Axtell Christian hospital.

Fatally injured in the accident were Mrs. Goering, 44, her daughter, Paulette, 12, and Albert Becker, 56, of Galva, all passengers in the Goering car. Funeral services for the mother and daughter were held Thursday afternoon at the Eden church near Moundridge, and services for Mr. Becker were held Friday at the West Zion church in Moundridge.

ALBERT BECKER

Albert Becker, son of Jacob B. and Mary Becker, was born near Moundridge, Kansas on Oct. 30, 1912, where he spent his childhood and attended elementary school.

On Oct. 28, 1934, he was united in marriage to Ella Wedel. God blessed this union with the birth of three children: Marlene, Jerry and Karen.

Albert was known by many as a competent mechanic. For 18 years he operated his own shop north of Moundridge. In February 1953 he sold his equipment and accepted a position with the Joe Goering Chevrolet Company of Moundridge, where he had served ever since.

Upon his confessoin [sic] of faith in Christ, he was baptized by E. M. Yost and became a member of the Lone Tree Church of God in Christ Mennonite Church on March 3, 1927. On Dec. 25, 1950 he united with the West Zion Mennonite Church of Moundridge where he was a member until his death.

On Sunday, Oct 5, on returning from a visit with his children in Kansas City, he was critically injured in an automobile accident. In spite of good medical care at the Axtell Christian Hospital, Newton, he never fully regained consciousness and on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 7, God called him home. He reached an age of 45 years, 11 months and seven days.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Ella; two daughters and their husbands, Marlene and John Unruh of Warden, Wash. and Karen and Carroll Goering of Kansas City, Mo.; one son and his wife, Jerry and Wynona Becker of Buhler, Kan.; two grandchildren, John Allen and Mary Susan Unruh; his parents, Jacob B. and Mary Becker; three brothers and their wives, Jesse and Frieda of Roxbury, kan., Aaron and Hanna of Metz, Mo., and Martin and LaDeen of Moundridge; two sisters and their husbands, Dora and Menno Koehn of Galva, Kan., and Myrtle and Milton Koehn of Galva, Kan; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Jacob B. Wedel; his grandmother, Mrs. John B. Unruh six brother-in-law and their wives; two sisters-in-law and their husbands; and a host of other relatives, neighbors and friends. Four infant sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, Oct. 10, in the West Zion Mennonite Church, Moundridge. Rev. Abe Koehn and Rev. Harris Waltner officiated.
