Youth Drowns When Pinned Under Tractor

FUNERAL SERVICES AT INDIANA CHURCH WIDELY ATTENDED

Kokomo, Ind. — A fatal accident at the Eli Beachy farm near Plevna on Friday afternoon, June 13, claimed the life of 15-year-old Mark D. Beachy when a tractor broke through a bridge and overturned, pinning him underneath in the water-filled ditch. Funeral services for the youth were held at the Howard-Miami (Old) Mennonite church on Sunday afternoon, June 15. It was one of the largest funerals ever held at this church. Bishop A. G. Horner preached the funeral sermon using as texts Romans 8:28 and II Timothy 4:6, 7, verses found on a book mark in the youth’s diary.

The young man was riding on the tractor with his father as they crossed a small bridge, which suddenly collapsed. The youth jumped, but was caught under the overturned machine and held under water. His father tried desperately to release him, but was unable to do so. He then secured help, but by the time the tractor was lifted off, it was too late.

Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Beachy; one sister, Doris Jean; the paternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Menno Beachy, the maternal grandfather, Jacob Borntrager, and several aunts and uncles.
