HOWARD BAUMAN

Howard Bauman, 68, of Middletown, Ohio, died May 4, 1997.

He was born Aug. 21, 1928, in Lisbon, Ohio, the son of Silas G. and Esther Lodwick Bauman. He was raised on the Firestone farm formerly in the Columbiana area, as his dad was a tenent [sic] farmer. Howard's Mennonite background — both Mennonite Church and General Conference Mennonite Church — gave him a broad outlook on the church's activities.

Howard was well-known among MC and GC members as he worked in his youth as secretary for Milo Kauffman, president of Hesston (Kan.) College. He served his country in 1-W from 1952 to 1954 as a conscientious objector, working in mental health in Cleveland and purchasing/shipping at Kaiser Refratories [sic Refractories] in Columbiana.

Howard thoroughly enjoyed being self-employed as an income tax accountant. He came to Middletown from Columbiana as manger of H^R Block. He served the community by helping indigent people with their taxes as well as through Trenton Mennonite Church with Mennonite Disaster Service. Mennonite Mutual Aid and Mennonite Central Committee.

He enjoyed traveling in the United States and Canada and working on a ranch in Montana. He was a council member for many years. He had been in a rehabilitation program in Ohio in his youth. He had a lower-back fusion of his spine, but that did not keep him from being very active.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Norma (Neufeld); a daughter, Sharon and husband Alvin Wenz of Plevna, Mont.; three sons, Karl of Cincinnati, Merle of Middletown and Wendel and wife joy of Ferndale, mich.; two grandsons; three sisters, Pauline Zehr of Fredericksburg, Va., Pearl Zehr of New Wilmington, Pa., and Carolyn Conrad of Columbiana.
