ANNA PENNER BARTEL

Anna Penner Bartel, daughter of Gertrude and Daniel Penner, was born March 31, 1864, at Schardau, South Russia and passed from this life at Hillsboro, Kansas on March 4, 1951, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 14 days.

In 1874, at the age of ten, she with her parents came to America and located near Hillsboro where she spent most of her life, with the exception of four years when she helped in the Indian Mission at Contonement [sic Cantonment] , Oklahoma.

On May 10, 1882, she was baptized by the late Rev. Wm. Ewert and united with the Bruderthal church, later transferring her membership to the newly established First Mennonite church of Hillsboro, thus becoming one of its charter members. She was always deeply interested in the work and welfare of the church, serving as teacher in the children’s department for many years and being active in the women’s missionary societies until her health kept her from doing so.

On September 25, 1898, she was united in marriage to Leonard Bartel, and helped with faithfulness and devotion to rear his nine motherless children, the youngest then being only two years of age. Four of these have preceded her in death — Aganetha, Anna, Helen and Bernhard.

The memory of her love and devotion for the family, her prayers in their behalf, her admonition for upright living will live on. She was a good wife, a loving mother, a friendly neighbor and she will be greatly missed. Mr. Bartel preceded her in death and departed this life April 18, 1919.

She leaves to mourn her departure one brother, Isaac Penner, five sons, Albert of Newton, Kansas, Heinrich, Peter, Leonard and Jacob of Hillsboro, and host of relatives and friends.
