• Funeral services were conducted at Trinity Mennonite Church in Hillsboro on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 5, for Waldo Bartel, 65, who was fatally injured in the collision of two pickup trucks near Durham Sunday afternoon, Feb. 1. Rev. Arnold Funk of North Newton officiated at the services. Mr. Bartel was a passenger in a northbound truck driven by Allen Schlehuber, rural Hillsboro, when it was hit by a westbound pickup driven by David Hein, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Hein, rural Durham. Mr. Bartel died instantly. Schlehuber and Hein were both taken to Salem Hospital in Hillsboro and Hein was later transferred to Bethel Hospital in Newton where he underwent surgery for abdominal injuries. He was released from the hospital Monday of this week. Mr. Bartel, a mechanic, was a lifetime resident of the Hillsboro community and owned and operated the Marion Machinery Co. Surviving in the immediate family are his widow, the former Goldie Regier; a son, Lee Roy, of Newton; one daughter, Mrs. Tom Smith of Salina; and seven grandchildren.
