Bartel, Roland (1919-2012)

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at the First Congregational Church of Eugene for Roland Bartel of Eugene, who died Sept. 20 of age-related causes. He was 93.

He was born Feb. 17, 1919, in Hillsboro, Kan., to Peter and Anna Schmidt Bartel. He married Betty Long on Oct. 19, 1943, in North Newton, Kan. She died Feb. 10, 1984. He married Evelyn Boelter on March 24, 1985. She died June 12, 2010.

He graduated from Bethel College in 1947 with a bachelor of arts degree. He earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1951. He was a conscientious objector and served in the Civilian Public Service from 1941 to 1945. He was a professor of English at the University of Oregon from 1951 to 1986 when he retired.

Survivors include a son, David of Eugene; two sisters, Martha Peters and Linda Goertzen, both of Goessel, Kan.; and two grandchildren. A son, Brian, died in January 1981.
