Bartel, Phyllis Irene Gates (1927-2010)

Bartel, Phyllis Irene (Gates) Phyllis was born at home in a small town of Kinsley, Kansas. She was the fourth of 4 children; 2 boys and 2 girls. She passed away in Tempe on April 6, 2010. Phyllis was thought of and loved with high regard both personally and professionally. She was a caring friend to who knew her well. She was married to Carl Bartel in 1947. Dr. Bartel preceded her in death in 1982. They had 4 children; 2 children a boy and girl died in infancy, Stewart and Cara; She leaves her son Steve and a daughter, Carla Reese. Also a loving daughter-in-law Marsha and 3 grandchildren- Nick and Jacob Bartel and June Reese, a sister in Wichita, Kansas, three nephews and one niece. Also she leaves a long time friend and companion, Sam Munoz who she affectionately called her "guardian angel" as he loved and cared for her in her later years, and also his family who she cared about deeply. Phyllis was a life long member of the Methodist Church. She received her education at Bethel College in Newton, Kansas and Masters Degrees from Utah State in Logan, Utah; and 60 hours above her MS at ASU in Tempe. While teaching she wrote "Big Books" for Riverside Publishing Co. for teachers to use in the classroom. Phyllis' heart sang while on earth but it was her spiritual eyes that danced. Her loving soul is now at rest and the Holy Spirit is with her as she is now with her Heavenly Father. Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 19, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church of Tempe, 215 E. University Dr. in Tempe. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to Tempe Mortuary.
