MRS.HUGO BARTEL
Funeral services for Mrs. Hugo Bartel were held from the North Star Mennonite Church at Drake Sask. on Sunday, Dec. 7. Rev. Hans Dyck of Swift Current, a close friend of the Bartel family, and Rev. Paul Schroeder were the speakers. A male quartet sang "Going Down the Valley." Mrs. Andrew Schroeder was organist.
Mrs. Bartel, nee Marie Funk, was born on Dec. 6, 1892, at Hillsboro, Kansas. Here she received her elementary school training. In later years she took a special nurses' course in Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton, Kansas.
Upon the confession of her faith in Christ as her personal Saviour, she was baptized at the age of 17 and received into the fellowship of the Brudertal Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. She was united in marriage to Hugo Bartel in June 1922. Two daughters and one son were born to them. She was received into the fellowship of the North Star Mennonite Church at Drake in 1924 and remained a faithful member to the end.
Mrs. Bartel had been in failing health the last few years, but whenever she was well enough she did not fail to attend the church services and the regular bi-weekly meetings of the Senior Ladies' Aid, of which she was a member. She was always keenly interested in the varied activities of the Society, but especially the welfare work that the society carried out among its members and beyond. She was instrumental in helping to organize and carry out the welfare work of the society. Many who were shut-in and sick will recall her cheery visits with flowers and readings to comfort and encourage. She firmly believed in strewing flowers while man is still on life's journey. For ten years she was the president of the Saskatchewan Ladies Conference, being its first president. Her presence will be missed, not only in her home and family, but also in the Senior Ladies' Aid, the church and the community.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband; Mildred, Mrs. David Schroeder, presently of Hamburg, Germany, Lois, Mrs. Paul Dyck, missionary to India, and Dennis at home; five grandchildren; three brothers, Ezra Funk of Hillsboro; one sister, Elizabeth, Mrs. John Brandt, also of Hillsboro; and a host of relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her parents and six brothers.
