NEWTON & VICINITY
● A Newton man was sentenced to 16 months in prison March 3 in connection with the death of Kaye Bartel, a Hillsboro Mennonite woman, in an car accident involving alcohol. Donald J. Stangle, 69, of Newton, entered a plea of no contest to charges of involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol, the Newton Kansan reported. The accident occurred June 25 near Hillsboro. Bartel, 40, was a member of First Mennonite Church of Hillsboro and is survived by her husband, Rollind, and two teenage sons. At the sentencing, Rollind Bartel addressed Strangle in a prepared statement: “The Bible says to forgive and forget. I can never forget . . . but for my peace of mind . . . I can honestly say that I forgive you.”
