— John H. Bartel, well known farmer at Hillsboro, Kansas, died in the Hillsboro hospital Sunday, Juen 15, as the result of a stroke which he suffered several months ago. Funeral services held at the Brudertal church Wednesday, June 18, were largely attended.

JOHN H. BARTEL, son of Heinrich and Helena Nagel Bartel, was born at Norka, South Russia, on August 5, 1877, and departed this life at the Salem Hospital, Hillsboro, Kansas, Sunday evening, June 15, 1941, at the age of 63 years, 10 months, and 10 days.

In 1892, as a 14 year old youth, he with an older sister, Katherine, came to America. After a short stay at Durham, Kansas, he spent some time with his relatives, John H. Bartel, in Otis, Kansas, where he began to attend school. After some time he returned to his uncle, Adam Bartel, Durham, who had aided him in coming to this country. He had to work hard for his own support and to repay his traveling expenses to America, so that little time was left for further schooling. On May 22, 1899 he was baptized upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, by the Elder Wm. J. Ewert, and received into the fellowship of the Brudertal Menn. Church where he remained a faithful member.

On Nov. 27, 1902, he married Maria Janz. They founded their home on a farm northeast of Hillsboro. This union was blessed with ten children, six sons and four daughters, all of whom are living and were able to attend the funeral.

He was quiet, conscientious, and of a cheerful disposition. He enjoyed good health until March 4, 1939, when he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. Although he gradually grew weaker, he suffered little pain. Without any complaint, cheerfully and resigned, knowing that the time of his departure was drawing near, he slipped away shortly after ten o'clock to be with Christ Whom he loved.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his bereaved wife; ten children; one son-in-law; six daughters-in-law; seventeen grandchildren, one having preceded him in death: one brother, Peter Bartel of Southard, Okla.; and many relatives. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 18, 1941, at the Brudertal church, conducted by Rev. Arnold Funk and Rev. J. M. Regier. Interment was made at the church cemetery.
