HEINRICH BARTEL

Heinrich Bartel was the oldest son of Leonhard and Agnetha Funk Bartel. He was born on June 23, 1878, in Marin County, Kansas, in the Brudertal community. On June 7, 1897, he was baptized by elder Wilhelm J. Ewert and became a member of the Brudertal Church. On March 5, 1903 he was united in marriage to Mary Nickel.

They lived on the farm near Hillsboro, with the exception of four years during which they lived near Texline, Texas. Our parents were privileged to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary in 1928 and their golden anniversary in March of 1953. Many times they thanked the Lord for His goodness towards them. In 1953 father and mother became members of the First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro.

In 1960 it became necessary that the parents retire from the farm, so they made their home with their daughter Anna and Frank Wiens in Inman. After mother's death in August 1962, father lived with his children. In July of this year he became a resident of the Home for Aged in Hillsboro.

Father enjoyed good heath most of his life and was a hard and willing worker. Recently it was necessary for him to spend eight days in the hospital. On Dec. 23, 1966 only two days after his return to his room at the Home, he passed away quietly at the call of his Lord. he reached the age of 88 years and six months.

Those preceding him in death were his wife, Mary; one daughter, Marie; and two sons, Waldo and Daniel; one infant grandson, and all of his brothers and sisters.

Those who remain to mourn his departure are two daughters, Anna and husband Frank Wiens of Inman and Elsie and husband Isaak Graves of Walton; two sons, Rudolf and Wife Kathryn of Denver, and Wilbert and wife Alvena of Hillsboro; one son-in-law; Otto Regier and wife Frieda of Buhler; one daughter-in-law; Leona Bartel of McPherson; 19 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Dec. 27, 1966 at 2 p.m. in Mennonite Brethren Church of Hillsboro, Rev. Elbert Koontz officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Cemetery.
