CORNELIUS H. BARTEL

Cornelius H. Bartel, the son of the Rev. H. H. Bartel, was born at Hillsboro, Kan. on Feb. 20, 1888. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith by Elder John Gerbrandt on Dec. 26, 1904 and received into the fellowship of the Johannestal Church at Hillsboro.

In 1906 he came to Canada with his parents and their family. They pioneered on the farm in Saskatchewan. Cornelius was one of the first members of the North Star Church, Drake, Sask., and also one of the first students to attend the Rosthern Junior College.

On Nov. 28, 1915, he married Marie Sawatzky of Herbert, Sask., with whom he shared joys and sorrows for 48 years and six months. To this union were born seven children, all of whom are living. They are Lottie (Mrs. Menno Ewert) of Drake, Naomi of Campbell River, B. C. (widow of Leon Gagne), Erling, Jake, Edgar and Eunice (Mrs. Eldon Gerbrandt), all of Drake, and Marian (Mrs. George Smith) of Winnipeg.

The deceased had been in good health until just a few years ago. When his health began to fail, he was hospitalized but was able to return home although he never completely recovered. This spring he was again admitted to the hospital. He was eventually brought home again and passed away quietly on May 28, on the 70th birthday of Mrs. Bartel.

The departed attained the age of 76 years, three months and eight days. He leaves to mourn his passing, his widow Marie, their three sons and four daughters; three brothers, Valentine, August, and Henry; two sisters, Annie (Mrs. Gust Ediger) and Marie (Mrs. George Lepp), and one adopted brother, Abe Schroeder; 36 grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
