MRS. CARRIE BARTEL

Mrs. Carrie Bartel was born in Avon, S.D. on Jan. 1, 1895. In March of 1900 at the age of five years she emigrated to Canada with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claas [sic Klaas] Schmidt. They settled on a homestead two and a half miles west of Waldheim, Sask. It is here that she spent her youth, sharing the pioneer problems of the day.

When possible she attended the Brotherfield school. As a family they attended the Salem church in the winter of 1911 Rev. George Schultz of Chicago held evangelistic meetings in the area at which time many committed their lives to Christ. There were 24 baptismal candidates and three baptismal services were held at Salem church that year. On the confession of her faith Carrie Schmidt also was baptized on August 27, 1911 with Rev. H. A. Goosen officiating.

On Aug. 9, 1917 she was united in marriage with Peter Bartel, Rev. J. D. Buller officiating. Their first nine years of married life were spent on the farm in the Schmidtsburg school district after which they moved to Waldheim. Their marriage was blessed with seven children, four boys and three girls, one of which died in infancy.

Throughout her years mother maintained a staunch faith in God and trusted Him for her daily needs, which continually revealed itself in her consecrated prayer life and witness to others.

In her life mother experienced good health. However, within the last year she did have some difficulty. After an operation which was performed on Monday, Oct. 19, she recovered rapidly and anticipated going home shortly. However on Oct. 24 a blood clot lodged in her lung and caused her sudden departure to be with the Lord her Savior. She reached the age of 64 years, nine months and 24 days.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Peter Bartel; two daughters, Esther of Langlie [sicLangley] Prairie, B.C. and Rosella of Carlton, Sask.; four sons, Elmer of Saskatoon, Sask. John of Waldneim, Norman of Newton, Kansas and Roy of Hague, Sask.; two sons-in-law, four daughters-in-law, 15 grandchildren, five brothers and three sisters, and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Zoar Mennonite church of Waldheim, Rev. John Block, Rev. Ed. H. M. Epp and Rev. F. F. Kroeker officiating. — Peter Bartel and Family.
