Father of Two Dies In Plane Crash While Hunting Coyotes

Hillsboro, Kan. — Funeral services were held at the Trinity Mennonite Church on Friday afternoon, Dec. 29, for Arthur Bartel, 31, who was fatally injured in a plane crash near here Sunday, Dec. 24. Rev. Victor Sawatzky, pastor of the church, officiated.

Mr. Bartel was piloting the Cessna plane owned by Paul Pittman, 23, of Mulvane, with Mr. Pittman as a passenger, when the craft went down on the Hugo Hiebert farm southwest of here. Mr. Pittman was seriously injured but is recovering. The two men were acting as spotters for a group of coyote hunters.

Mr. Bartel who died in the Salem Hospital here about four hours after the crash, lived at Derby and was employed as a technician by the Kansas Air National Guard in Wichita. He was a graduate of the Hillsboro schools.

Surviving are his widow, Linda, and children Ricky and Cristy of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Bartel of Hillsboro; a brother, LeRoy of Newton; and a sister, Mrs. Jerry (Naomi) Gisi of Oregon.
