AGNETA BARTEL

Agneta Bartel of Winnipeg passed away May 6. She was born Jan. 2, 1914 to Zacharias and Elisabeth Bartel in Sady, near Warsaw, Poland. She spent her childhood and youth on the family farm. She attended Sunday school and church in a home church affiliated with the MB church in Wymyschle. She accepted Jesus and in May, 1931 was baptized in the Vistula River by Leonhard Ratzlaff. In 1941 her mother died, and she took over the domestic responsibilities. In 1944 she and her father fled west to Kalthof, West Prussia. Her father was drafted into the military, and she fled west on foot after losing her horse and wagon. She finally gained contact with relatives in the west and in 1948 was allowed to travel from East Germany to the MCC refugee camp in Gronau. In 1949 she immigrated to Rosemary, Alta. In 1950 she joined her family in Winnipeg, where she worked in a sewing factory and cared for her father. In 1967 she joined Central MB Church. In 1973 her father died. After retirement she continued to make patchwork blankets for MCC at church and help at the MCC thrift store. She was a caring aunt to her nieces and nephews. She sold her home in 1983 and in 1985 moved to Donwood South Apartments. In April, 1990 she joined North Kildonan MB Church, but was hospitalized shortly afterward. Predeceased by 2 brothers and 1 sister in infancy, she is mourned by her sister Martha Kliewer; brother David; 2 nieces and 4 nephews. The funeral was May 9 in Central MB Church, with Abe Quiring and John Epp ministering.
