CORNELIUS F. BARKMAN

Cornelius F. Barkman, 82, of Steinbach, Man. passed away quietly on May 10 ,in the Ste'inbach Bethesda Hospita"- He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John ,G. Barkman of Stein'bach, who were among the pioneer settllers of the community in 1874. After comp"leting his schoo'ling in Steinbach he attended the Mennonite Col'legiate Institute alf Gretna and then taught schoo'l at Clearsprings and Steinbach. He res'igned as p rind pal of the Steinbach schoo:1 in 1918 'and moved to Engen, BiC. where he opened upa genera,1 store 'and post office. However in 1920 he returned to Steinbach and was apPo'inifed postmaster, a POs'ilion he held until his ret,irement in 1955. Dur,ing these years "he served in the church and in the community in various capaoities-as a member of the hospital board, as a director of the Bible linstitute and on the Board of Trustees o,f rthe Steinbaoh Mennonite Brethren Church. He was ma'rried to Sara E. Neufeld on November 25, 1917 'and to this marriage were brought two chosen children, Constance (Mrs. Jacob Ke1:1ler) of Steinbach, 'and Dennis of ChHliwack. His wife predeceased him in 1958. The funeral was held ,in the Steinbach Mennoni,te Brethren Churoh on May 13 with the ministering brethren John D. Reimer, H.A. Regehr and H.S. Rempel serving. Besides his chHdren and their fam'ilies, he is survived by o'ne brother, Peter IF. Barkman of Steinbach, and four s'isifers, Mrs. P.t Reimer of Ste. Anne, Man., Mrs. P. Froese of Steinbach, Mrs. J.D. B'af't1el of Giroux, Man., and Mrs. F:P. Wiebe of Abbots'ford, 'B.C. One slister and three bro,t hers .predeceased ,him.
