Newton Man Killed When Hit By Car

An accident on Highway 81 between Newton and Wichita last Friday night resulted resulted in instant death for James H. Barkman, 69, a resident of Newton since 1942.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Grace Mennonite Church west of Halstead, with Rev. Carl Dirks and Rev. Arnold Wiggers officiating.

Investigating officers said Mr. Barkman was walking along the center strip of the four-lane highway about two and a half miles south of the Harvey-Sedgwick line when he walked or stumbled into the path of a car driven a McPherson man. He was thrown up over the hood and into the windshield of the car.

A daughter, Miss Ruby Barkman of Wichita, was waiting for her father in a car nearby, and said he was looking for a piece of wire to make a repair.

A native of Hillsboro, Mr. Barkman was married there in 1923 to Lydia Esau. She survives with a son Jake of Newton, two daughters, Ruby of Wichita and Mrs. Dorothy Roberts of Newton; two sisters and six brothers; and seven grandchildren.
