CORNELIUS F. BARKMAN
Cornelius F. Barkman, 82, of Steinbach, Man. passed away quietly on May 10 in the Steinbach Bethesda Hospital. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Barkman of Steinbach, who were among the pioneer settlers of the community in 1874. After completing his schooling in Steinbach he attended the Mennonite Collegiate Institute at Gretna and then taught school at Clearsprings and Steinbach. He resigned as principal of the Steinbach schoo1 in 1918 and moved to Engen, B.C. where he opened up a general store and post office. However in 1920 he returned to Steinbach and was apppointed postmaster, a position he held until his retirement in 1955. During these years he served in the church and in the community in various capacities as a member of the hospital board, as a director of the Bible Institute and on the Board of Trustees of the Steinbaoh Mennonite Brethren Church.
He was married to Sara E. Neufeld on November 25, 1917 and to this marriage were brought two chosen children, Constance (Mrs. Jacob Ketler) of Steinbach, and Dennis of Chilliwack. His wife predeceased him in 1958.
The funeral was held in the Steinbach Mennonite Brethren Church on May 13 with the ministering brethren John D. Reimer, H.A. Regehr and H.S. Rempel serving.
Besides his children and their families, he is survived by one brother, Peter F. Barkman of Steinbach, and four sisters, Mrs. P. I. Reimer of Ste. Anne, Man., Mrs. P. Froese of Steinbach, Mrs. J.D. Bartel of Giroux, Man., and Mrs. F. P. Wiebe of Abbotsford, B.C. One sister and three brothers predeceased him.
