Melvin G. Bare

Melvin G. Bare was killed shortly before noon Saturday, Aug. 27, 1966 in a tractor accident at his farm home northwest of Kalona, Iowa.

Mr. Bare had been working in a timber near his home and it was believed that he was returning to the house when the accident happened. It was thought that the tractor he was driving hit a stump and overturned. He apparently was injured when he was thrown from the tractor. A manure spreader being pulled behind the tractor which was being used to carry tools, is believed to have passed over his body.

The tractor turned completely over, landed on its wheels and continued several rods before it dropped into a ditch and stopped.

A son of Mahlon G. and Anna Holdeman Bare, he was born Aug. 31 1915 at Harper, Kan. He died at the age of 51 years and four days.

On June 8, 1941 he was married to Leona Miller of Kalona. They lived near Wayland for a few years and moved northwest of Kalona in 1945 where they were engaged in farming. He was a member of the East Union Mennonite church.

Survivors include his widow; one son, James of Goshen, Ind.; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Miller of Kalona; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Graber of Mount Pleasant and Mrs. Frank Heyda of Kanoga, Park Calif; and five brothers, Richard and John of Mt. Pleasant, Ben in Germany, Tillman of Pryor, Okla., and Harry of Adair, Okla. There is one grandchild.

Funeral services were held at the East Union Mennonite church on Aug. 30 in charge of J. John J. Miller and A. Lloyd Swartzendruber. Burial was made in the East Union cemetery.
