WOMEN [sic] FATALLY BURNED AS GASOLINE-SPLATTERED DRESS CATCHES FIRE

Winkler, Man. — A large funeral was held at the Mennonite church at Chortitz Sunday afternoon, March 31, when Mrs. C. C. Baman, 63, was laid to her final earthly resting place there.

Mrs. Banman died at the Bethel Hospital in Winkler on Wednesday, March 27, as a result of serious burns suffered early that day. She had accidentally splattered some gasoline on her dress, which later burst into flames as she walked near an open kerosene lamp. Hearing her screams, Mrs. Friesen, a neighbor, rushed to her aid and put out the flames by wrapping a blanker around Ms. Banman after she had made an unsuccessful attempt to save herself by running into a nearby creek.

Her grief-stricken husband and 13 children survive.
